Our field trip to Little Smiles dental offices was lots of fun and very enlightening! Ask your child what happened to the hard boiled eggs that were soaked in cola, vinegar, and orange juice. Also, ask them why eating dessert BEFORE their fruit or vegetable might be healthy!
An email was sent earlier by the Jeffers office informing all families that March is Reading Month. We will be kicking off the fun on Monday with a short assembly. Your child will be coming home with a newsletter and calendar telling you what special activities are planned. Also, each oldest child in the building will bring home a copy of The Enormous Egg. We will be reading this book together as a school! Here are some of our learning goals for the week:

A big, big thank you for all parent contributions towards pizza! The kids were SO excited about our pizza party. We even watched some original episodes of The Muppets while we ate. We have been doing a lot of work with non-fiction reading lately and, as part of that, I read aloud a biography of Jim Henson. The kids really enjoyed seeing all the creations they'd been hearing about.
I have challenged the students once again to increase their AR points. This time, the challenge is for everyone in class to get an additional 4 points. That will earn them another pizza party PLUS an extra recess! Already , three of them have reached that goal and a fourth is only 1 point away! Math is becoming increasingly challenging for the kids, but I am happy to say they are working hard and seem to become more and more independent everyday. Just a reminder to parents that, while the methods taught in classrooms today look quite different than the way we were taught as children, you may help your child to understand their math in any way that works for them and for you. There is more than one way to understand subtraction and, as long as your child can do the work independently and accurately, that's the goal. But, of course, feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. Love is in the air. And snow. Lots of snow. Stay warm with your loved ones this Valentine's Day weekend.
A BIG thank you to all the parents who came to help us celebrate our Valentine's Day Party! Next week Friday we are taking a trip to Little Smiles Grand Haven as part of Dental Health Month. We are leaving with Mrs. Ball's class at 12:50 on Friday and returning at 2:25. No sack lunches or parent chaperons are necessary for this trip. Second Grade Art Room News: Second Graders are continuing their exploration of green art with Ms. Lundman. They are using recycled CDs to create looms to weave on. These kids are weaving masters! Once they are done, they will put all of the looms together to make one large group work of art. Here is just a sample of our learning goals for this past week:
Three words could sum up this entire short week: Double Digit Subtraction
Yes, parents, that has been the largest focus of our time together this week. Please know that the methods we are teaching to our kids might look quite different from they way you learned to subtract. Click to see a quick video to help explain the "Expanded Method" and "Ungroup First" methods of doing subtraction. Your child may do their subtracting using any method they prefer. What's important is that they understand how to find the answer and are able to do it independently. Also, in the process of learning double digit subtraction it has become apparent that MANY of these kiddos need a reinforcement of basic addition and subtraction facts. Along with their daily 20 minutes of reading, I would highly encourage your to have your child practice some basic math facts for 10 minutes or so daily, as well. Feel free to use Moby Max Fact Master as a resource for this. I have put forth a challenge to the class. If everyone in our class can achieve 2 additional AR points by next Friday, we will have a class pizza party. Please remind your child of this challenge and encourage them to read, read, read over the weekend. Our Valentine's Day party is planned for next Friday, February 13th, from 1:40-2:30. All are welcome to join us. I have contacted all volunteers already, but am still in need of a party coordinator if anyone is interested. Let me know. We will make a holder for our Valentines here in class, Please make sure a valentine is brought for each member of the class. Here were our learning goals for the (short) week:
