It's beginning to look a lot like..........well, you get the picture. Even during this busy (most wonderful?) time of the year, room C4 is focused on learning, learning, learning! A new math unit began focusing on units of measurement. Ask your third grader to tell you all about King Gallon and his kingdom. We also spent some time measuring by inches, half inches, and quarter inches. The idea that measuring to the NEAREST quarter inch or half inch was difficult for the kiddos. Many had a hard time. Here is an illustration of why: When measuring the pink dot to the nearest 1/4 inch, it is closer to 3 inches than to 2 & 3/4 inches. The idea that 3 inches equals 2 & 4/4 inches (therefore making it the nearest quarter inch) was a tough one. Just an FYI.
We are really focusing on the characters in our books. Students are noticing how characters grow and change. That means that we must revise our own opinions of those characters as we read. We are also working at feeling empathy with our characters. Students began chunking their personal narrative writing pieces into paragraphs. We are breaking our narratives into 4 parts (first, then, next, last). Paragraphs will change each time a new part of our story begins. Your child should have brought home their gift from Santa's Workshop on Tuesday. Thanks to all of the parents and friends that were able to come help out with that! Finally, report cards come home on Friday. Please sign and return the attached letter from Mrs. Peets. The report card itself is yours to keep.
